Most parents choose a school by looking at the tuition fee. It is the number on the website, the number everyone quotes, and the number you plan your budget around. The problem is that it is not what you actually pay. By the time a child is settled into a Dubai school, the real cost is usually well above the headline fee, and the gap catches a lot of families out in the first term. Here is the honest picture, so you can budget with your eyes open rather than getting a nasty surprise.

Why the tuition fee is only the start

Across Dubai, tuition ranges enormously, from under AED 15,000 a year at the most affordable schools to more than AED 110,000 at the top of the premium scale. But whatever the fee, the true cost of schooling usually runs somewhere between fifteen and thirty percent higher once everything is added in. On a fee of AED 40,000 that is another AED 6,000 to AED 12,000 a year. At a premium school the extras can add far more. These are not sneaky charges, they are simply the costs that sit outside the headline number, and most parents forget to count them.

The one-off costs of getting a place

Before your child even starts, there are upfront charges. The application fee is capped by KHDA at a small amount, usually around AED 500, and it is not refundable. Many schools also charge an assessment fee of a few hundred dirhams when your child sits their entry test. Then comes the big upfront one, the deposit to secure the place. This is usually somewhere between AED 5,000 and AED 10,000, and at most schools it is set against your first term of fees rather than lost. At some of the most sought after schools it works differently, the deposit is a percentage of the annual fee, often around ten percent, and it may not be refundable once you accept. A handful of premium schools also charge a one time capital or building fee on top, which can run from a few thousand dirhams to more than twenty thousand.

The yearly extras that quietly add up

These are the costs that return every year and surprise families who budgeted for tuition alone. The school bus is often the largest. Door to door transport usually costs between AED 5,000 and AED 12,000 a year, and the further you live from the school, the more you pay. Uniform in the first year can run from a few hundred dirhams to a couple of thousand, and many schools insist you buy branded items from a single supplier. Books, devices and technology fees add more, often another AED 1,000 to AED 4,000, especially at schools that require a specific laptop or tablet. If your child eats in the canteen and the school does not allow packed lunches, meals can add a few thousand dirhams more. On top of all that sit school trips and after school clubs, which range from modest sums to several thousand dirhams a year for serious sports, music or residential trips.

Exam fees in the senior years

Once your child reaches the exam years, the entry fees for their qualifications are billed in addition to tuition. A full set of IGCSE subjects, A Levels or the IB Diploma can each add several thousand dirhams in the relevant year. It is easy to overlook because it only hits once your child is older, but it is a real and often unbudgeted cost.

If your child needs extra support

This is the single biggest cost that catches families off guard, and it is the one we see underestimated most often. If your child needs help with English as an additional language or general learning support, that can add somewhere between AED 10,000 and AED 30,000 a year. If a school requires a dedicated one to one assistant, sometimes called a shadow teacher, the cost is usually higher again. For a family whose child needs real support, this can quietly double the cost of the school, so it is essential to ask about it and factor it in before you fall in love with a place.

How fees rise each year, and what is not capped

School fees in Dubai are regulated by KHDA, and how much a school is allowed to raise its fees each year is linked to its inspection rating. Higher rated schools can increase fees by more than lower rated ones. That matters for your long term budget, because the fee you pay in Year 1 is not the fee you will pay in Year 5. There is an important catch. Some costs sit outside those fee caps entirely, including transport and capital fees, so a school can hold its tuition steady and still raise what you pay elsewhere. Always read the full fee schedule, not just the headline tuition.

So what should you actually budget

A sensible rule is to add somewhere between fifteen and thirty percent on top of the tuition fee to get the real figure. In practice that is often another AED 15,000 to AED 35,000 per child each year once you include the deposit, transport, uniform, trips and everything else. For a family with two children, those extras alone can run to the price of a small second tuition fee. Before you commit, you can check a school's official approved tuition fee on the KHDA website, so at least the core number is one you can trust.
