How to choose the right school for your child in Dubai

There is no single best school in Dubai. There is only the right one for your child. Here is how to find it without the guesswork.

Choosing a school
No. 02

Every parent wants the best school for their child. In Dubai that is harder than it sounds. There are more than two hundred schools and several different curricula, and the parent groups are full of strong and often contradictory opinions. It is easy to feel lost before you have even started.

The first thing to let go of is the idea that there is one best school. There is only the right school for your child, and the two are not the same thing. The school everyone raves about may be completely wrong for your son or daughter. Here is how to find the one that actually fits.

Start with your child, not the league tables

The most common mistake is to pick a school by its reputation and work backwards. A school that suits one child can be wrong for another. So start by thinking honestly about how your child learns and what makes them happy. Some children thrive in a large competitive school with a big name. Others do far better somewhere smaller and gentler, where they are known rather than counted. A top academic school is no prize if your child feels lost inside it. Fit comes first and everything else follows from it.

Think about the curriculum and where you are heading

Dubai offers British, American, IB and Indian curricula among others, and the choice matters more than many parents realise. If your child is settled in one system, moving them to another is not a decision to take lightly. It also pays to look ahead. Where might your family go next, and which system would travel best if you move again. Which route makes sense for the kind of university you picture for your child one day. The right curriculum fits your child now and keeps their options open later.

Treat the KHDA rating as a guide, not a verdict

Every school in Dubai is inspected and rated by the KHDA, and the rating is genuinely useful. Just do not treat it as the last word. A rating is a snapshot. It can lag behind what is actually happening in a school today, and an Outstanding badge does not mean a school is outstanding for your particular child. Use ratings to shorten your list. Do not let them make the decision for you.

Work out the real cost before you fall in love

The tuition fee is only part of what you will pay. On top of it you will often find a registration charge, a deposit, transport, uniform, school trips and exam fees. If your child needs extra learning support, some schools require a dedicated assistant, which can add a serious amount on top. Add the whole thing up before you set your heart on a school, so you are choosing with open eyes rather than getting an unpleasant surprise once your child is enrolled.

Do not underestimate the commute

This one quietly catches people out. Dubai traffic is real and the city is spread out. A school that looks perfect on paper can mean your child sitting in a car for the best part of an hour each way, every single day. That wears a child down and it wears you down with them. A slightly less famous school ten minutes from home can honestly be the better choice. Be realistic about how far you are willing to travel before you fall for somewhere on the other side of the city.

Check that there is actually a place

Here is the one most parents forget. The best school in the world is not an option if it has no room for your child's year. The most popular schools fill their main entry years early and keep long waiting lists behind them. So before you pour your hopes into a shortlist, find out which schools genuinely have a place for your child's age and start date. We spend a great deal of our time doing exactly this, because a list of dream schools with no space in them helps nobody.

If your child needs support, look hardest at the inclusion team

If your child has any additional needs, the overall rating of a school matters far less than the strength of its inclusion and support department. Provision varies enormously from one school to the next. Two schools with the same rating can be worlds apart in how well they actually look after a child who learns differently. Ask directly, and speak to the people who would be supporting your child day to day rather than only the admissions office.

Nothing replaces a visit

Once you have a realistic shortlist, go and see the schools in person. A website and a rating cannot tell you how a place feels. Watch how the children and the teachers speak to one another. Notice whether the children seem happy and settled. Ask specific questions about your child's year, the size of the classes and how the school supports a new arrival. You will often know within ten minutes whether somewhere feels right for your family.
